Support for Self-Employment

Help in Becoming a Self-Employed Worker

Would you like to start your own business or become a self-employed worker? If you are eligible for the Support for Self-Employment measure, you can receive financial assistance to develop a business plan and get your business off the ground or create your own job.

You are eligible if

  • you receive Employment Insurance benefits;
  • you receive employment-assistance benefits;
  • you are unemployed and do not receive public income support;
  • your employment status is unstable.

The Support for Self-Employment measure must enable you to find employment and join the work force.

Eligible projects

To be eligible for assistance, your project must

  • be viable;
  • meet a community need;
  • not create unfair competition for existing businesses.

Participation time

Implementation of your project must be your main occupation.

Duration of assistance

Maximum 52 weeks

Resources providing this assistance

  • Local employment centres (CLE)
  • Local development centres (CLD)
  • CLD-accredited organizations that offer entrepreneurial support
